Grandviewβs Shayan Kermany notches first win of 2023-2024 season
BURNABY WINTER CLUB β Grandview goalie Shayan Kermany provided a jaw-dropping highlight reel between the pipes when he stared down two short-handed breakaways Sept. 17.
On each rush, the veteran netminder outwaited the same opposing player: Port Coquitlamβs Robbie Toor. And on both breakaways, Toor pulled off a forehand to backhand deke β while Kermany spun and flashed his paddle β as the puck rolled wide.
ββI think I got a little lucky there. Iβm going to be completely honest,β Kermany said with a smile after the 7-2 victory. βNever been undressed so hard in my life beforeβ¦thought I got a piece of the [puck] but I didnβt,β he quipped.
The 18-year-oldβs performance brought a hearty salute from his teammates at the bench. This is Kermanyβs third season for the Steelers. Last year, he strapped the pads on for 33 games with 21 wins and a 3.36 goals-against-average.
βGot to be good to lucky and lucky to be good,β Kermany pointed out.
Konechny shows offensive brilliance
Meanwhile, Steelers Oliver Nottingham and Luke Cox both scored their first goals of the season before teammate Steven Konechnyβs powerplay marker put Grandview ahead 3-0.
Cox also provided a physical edge as he flattened Trailblazer Leo Keith with a shoulder hit at centre ice.
After Port Coquitlamβs Markus Jack put his team on the scoreboard, Nottingham fired a heads-up pass to Konechny. He streaked down the left wing and wristed a high shot past Trailblazer goalie Timur Mikhashin to send Port Coquitlam home.
βI didnβt really see it go in β but it went in and thatβs all that matters,β Konechny said.
At press time, Sept. 18, the Steelers had a record of one win, one loss, and one shootout loss for a total of three points.
